Learn how to configure Short URL for your URL outputs from the Project configuration.
Note: Before configuring Short URL outputs, ensure you created a Short URL domain. If you haven't, refer to this article for guidance.
A Short URL is a shortened version of a URL that can be generated for any URL output you configure. Short URLs can be on-brand and are often used in combination with QR codes to create dynamic destinations. This allows you to change the destination URL of the QR code without altering the QR code itself.
Configuring a Short URL
Assuming you have already created a domain for Short URLs, the next step is to configure it for the URL output you wish to generate it for.
Here are the steps:
- Access the Short URL configuration
Navigate to 'Settings' > 'Configuration' > 'Output fields' > Locate a URL type output > Click the 'Short URL' tab - Enable Short URL
Simply toggle the 'Enable Short URL' button. - Add domain to use
You're now able to add the domains that have been previously configured.
These domains are available for users to choose from when generating a Short URL for the specific URL output. In other words, Short URLs for this output can be generated using any of the domains you add here.
A short URL looks like this: https://sub.domain.com/path - Publish the project configuration
That's it! A button to generate Short URLs will now be displayed in records with the URL output you configured.
Removing a Short URL domain
To remove a Short URL domain, click the trash icon next to it.
Removing a domain means it is no longer available for selection when generating Short URLs. However, the domain will still work for existing Short URLs.
Note: Removing all the domains in a Short URL configuration will not hide the Short URL field. If that is your intention, you'll need to disable the Short URL feature. See the section below.
Disabling Short URL
To disable the Short URL for an output, toggle off the 'Enable Short URL' button.
Disabling Short URL means that all Short URLs generated from the output will be hidden. Users will also lose the ability to generate new Short URLs for it. However, re-enabling it will make the Short URLs visible and available for use again, in both records and data schemas.
Note: The Short URLs are hidden but still functional.
Generating QR codes for Short URLs
By default, users can also generate QR codes for all URL outputs, including Short URLs. However, you can choose to disable QR code generation, giving you control over which short links users can generate QR codes for.
When QR code generation is disabled, the 'Get QR code' button will be hidden for the specific Short URL in all records. To do so:
- Access the QR code generation configuration
From an URL output, switch to the 'QR code' tab - Disable QR code generation
Here you'll find two toggles, which are enabled by default:
- 'Full URL'
Toggle off to disable QR codes for the URL output. - 'Short URL'
Toggle off to disable QR codes for Short URLs. This setting can only be adjusted if the Short URL feature is enabled.
